all the world’s a stage… in the Cloud

Live theatre is a secular temple — a gathering, nurturing, healing place— in our increasingly fractured world.

But how does live theatre happen in the post-pandemic era of uncertainty and digital disruption?

Our mission: to reinvigorate live theatre for the postdigital era, where live performance will happen in-person and in the Cloud.

We've done this by partnering with leading regional institutions and artist groups to co-create meaningful, provocative live performances that engage their current patrons as well as new audiences all over the world. Our projects also provided new opportunities for professional artists who had been impacted by the pandemic as well long-term economic challenges for in-person theatre companies.

Now that we are in the post-pandemic, we are turning our focus to incubating theatrical/cinematic works that employ new storytelling technologies — including AI, robotics, and VR/AR — and that explore the human condition in the age of machines. In 2024, our fourth season, we will lend support to three projects:

Pathway. A near-future Sci-Fi streaming series that delves into society's reliance on technology for personal transformation and connection, and the hopeful, yet desperate belief that this will be humanity's last-minute savior.

The Pitch. A live film about a global competition to win a strategy consulting contract with the most highly valued company in the world.”

Jack London Slept Here. A mostly dark, mostly silent, comic film about the limited capacity of technology to meet essential human needs.

“Remote Theater is one of those newly-minted organizations designed especially to solve the challenges of the absence of live theater….”

Victor Cordell, member, American Theatre Critics Association

“ONE FLEA SPARE” received an elegant and dynamic production from Remote Theater, and Giovanni Rodriguez did a masterful job directing the play. I'm very much looking forward to our next project together.”

—Naomi Wallace, Obie-award winning playwright

“Only at the Remote could I work with four of my favorite actors ever without having to book them two years in advance. And I loved the result. Who knew that seeing my plays online could be just as powerful as seeing them in person?”

—Billy Aronson, the originator of the concept and librettist for RENT

“My play Magician's Choice received a wonderful staged reading at Remote Theater. The cast were among the finest actors in the Bay Area, and director Giovanni Rodriguez created an intimate, nuanced, and emotionally powerful production. I've had two dozen plays produced live nationally and this production hit it out of the park.”

—Lynne Kaufman, winner of NEA New American Plays Award, among others.
